“The Most Important Meeting on Adult Reconstruction in the World”

AAHKS members and others gathered in Dallas this past weekend to learn about the latest research and techniques in adult reconstruction and bring actionable insights back to their practices. The size and scope of the 2018 AAHKS Annual Meeting continued to trend upward with an 11% growth in attendance.

Leading up to the AAHKS General Session, industry partners hosted industry symposia on topics ranging from robotics to outpatient surgery. Several mobile labs provided opportunities for hands-on experience with devices and techniques. More than 2,400 attendees participated in these programs.

Some attendees also participated in AAHKS special courses: Orthopaedic Team Member, Business of Total Joint Replacement and Resident Arthroplasty. The Young Arthroplasty Group held an educational program and networking reception with more than 80 young surgeons in attendance. The Orthopaedic PAC presented at the event. Representatives of the British Hip Society and Italian Hip Society participated as the 2018 Guest Societies and co-hosted the popular International Reception that brings together member surgeons from around the world. The newly-constituted Women in Arthroplasty Committee, under the leadership of Audrey K. Tsao, MD, held a lunch program that drew over 40 surgeons. “The reason this committee was formed is because women orthopaedic surgeons have made a huge impact in orthopaedic surgery as a specialty overall, but in arthroplasty, we’ve lagged a little behind. I’m quite excited about this committee.”

Highlights of the General Session included Daniel J. Berry, MD’s “Practice Norms in Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: What is Everyone Else Doing?“ and “The Comprehensive Management of the Bariatric Patient: Perspectives from Bariatric and Orthopaedic Surgeons” held in collaboration with the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.

Congratulations to the 2018 AAHKS Presidential Award recipient, Stefano A. Bini, MD and the 2018 AAHKS Humanitarian Award recipient, Gerard “Jerry” A. Engh, MD. The FARE Grant awardee was announced during the General Session. Thomas K. Fehring, MD received $50,000 for the OrthoCarolina study, “How to Improve the Results of Irrigation and Debridement for PJI through the use of Intraosseous Antibiotics.”

The Keynote Session “fireside chat” with George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States, and Matthew P. Abdel, MD, Program Chair, not only added a level of excitement to the Meeting, but also provided valuable leadership insights for surgeons and their surgical teams.

AAHKS President, Craig J. Della Valle, MD, called the AAHKS Annual Meeting “the most important meeting on adult reconstruction in the world.” Thank you to AAHKS members, corporate partners and staff for another amazing year!
