The February issue of The Journal of Arthroplasty (JOA) includes the study, “Inpatient Versus Outpatient Arthroplasty: A Single-Surgeon, Matched Cohort Analysis of 90-Day Complications.” The authors sought to investigate the safety of same-day arthroplasty by researching complication rates at an ambulatory surgical center in a single-surgeon cohort of 243 consecutive patients undergoing inpatient surgery and 243 consecutive patients undergoing outpatient surgery. Authors concluded that “arthroplasty procedures can be performed safely in an ambulatory surgery center among appropriately selected patients without an increased risk of complications.” A Perspective by William G. Hamilton, MD is given in OrthopedicsToday.
