Durom cup pulled from market in wake of complaints.
According to the New York Times, sales of the Durom cup—an artificial hip component manufactured by Zimmer, Inc. (Warsaw, Ind.)—will be voluntarily suspended by the company in response to complaints by physicians that the device has a high failure rate. The cup has been implanted in more than 12,000 patients since 2006, and company data suggests that hundreds of those patients may need to have the component replaced in coming years. An investigation by the manufacturer determined that the product was not defective, but did note that even some experienced surgeons found it difficult to implant. The company plans to resume sales of the device after implementing a specialized training program for physicians. Reprinted with permission from AAOS Headline News Now, 7/25/2008.
