AAHKS Introduces Dallas Minority STEM Students to Orthopaedics at
the 2022 AAHKS Annual Meeting

Rosemont, IL – On Thursday, November 3, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) proudly launched a hands-on workshop for over 50 minority STEM students from Dallas high schools. The workshop aimed to increase awareness of the orthopaedics specialty through surgeon led talks and hands-on workshops using real surgical tools and life-like plastic bones.
AAHKS partnered with the Nth Dimensions organization to conduct the program. Nth Dimensions’ aim is to always promote comprehensive excellence in medical students, residents and fellows by increasing their exposure to academic and non-academic resources necessary to become successful health care providers in the future. the first of its kind five-hour workshop was packed with topics that nurtured the high school students’ curiosity in medicine and orthopaedics.
Nth Dimensions was founded in 2004, by orthopaedic surgeons working collaboratively with academic institutions, community surgeons, and industry to address the dearth of women and underrepresented minorities (URMs) in orthopaedic surgery. The overarching goal of Nth Dimensions is to address and eliminate health care disparities for all communities.

I, myself, was an Nth Dimensions scholar in 2005, so it was personally meaningful to be able to interact with students who remind me of myself, Dr. Adelani added. It was amazing to see them become enthusiastic about medicine, and orthopaedics specifically, throughout the day. We hope to continue to work with Nth Dimensions going forward.”
AAHKS is intends to continue this program as it returns to the Dallas area every November to conduct its Annual Meeting for 4,000 hip and knee surgeons and medical industry representatives. With education and outreach being two pillars of our mission, the value of exposing students to the field of hip and knee surgery early in their schooling is clear in promoting diversity.
