Researcher on the Effects of Inferior Screw Placement on Acetabular Component Failure Following Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty Wins Award
November 04, 2023 (Dallas, TX) – A study presented at the 2023 American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Annual Meeting asks whether inferior screw fixation in revision acetabular reconstruction decreases acetabular component failure. Lead author Christopher M. Melnic, MD and co-authors Amy Z. Blackburn, BA, Ashish Mittal, MD, Brian Velasco, MD, Colin M. Baker, DO, Nicholas Vandal, BA, Saad Tarabichi, MD, P. Maxwell Courtney, MD, Neil P. Sheth, MD and Hany S. Bedair, received the AAHKS Surgical Techniques and Technologies Award, which recognizes outstanding advancement in surgical innovation within reconstructive surgery.
“My co-authors and I are honored to receive the AAHKS Surgical Techniques and Technologies award for our manuscript on inferior screw fixation in revision total hip arthroplasty. In this multicenter, retrospective study, we found that the addition of inferior screw fixation for Paprosky Type II or III acetabular bone loss was associated with a lower rate of aseptic failure compared to fixation with superior screws alone,” says Christopher M. Melnic, MD.
Approximately 250 patients with Paprosky Type II or III defects who underwent acetabular revision were reviewed. Multivariate regression was performed to identify the independent effect of inferior screw fixation on primary outcome of aseptic re-revision of the acetabular component.
In conclusion, researchers found that inferior screw fixation is a safe and reliable technique to reduce acetabular component failure following revision THA in cases of severe acetabular bone loss.
