Study Concludes Cementless Knee Replacement Has Excellent Results

Dallas, November 2, 2018 — The study, “A Prospective, Randomized Trial of Cemented vs. Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty of the Same, Modern Design,” presented at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) compared clinical outcomes of cemented versus cementless versions of the same total knee arthroplasty (TKA) design.

Denis Nam, MD, MSc and co-authors Charles M. Lawrie, MD, Rondek Salih, MPH, Cindy R. Nahhas, BS, Robert L. Barrack, MD and Ryan M. Nunley, MD included 120 patients aged 18-74 undergoing TKA in the IRB-approved, prospective, randomized controlled trial. Patients were asked to rate their knee as a percentage of normal at least two years post-surgery.

The study results showed that “no differences were seen in any clinical outcome measures (p=0.2 to 0.8). Patients with a cemented TKA rated their knee to be 87.0+12.3% of normal versus 87.6+13.8% in the cementless cohort (p=0.8). There was no radiographic evidence of component loosening in either cohort.” The authors suggest that while the cementless TKA design demonstrates excellent results, further surveillance is necessary to determine long-term benefit.
