AMA Practice Benchmark Report Released

In 2020, less than 50% of patient care physicians worked in a private practice for the first time, after dropping almost 5% from 2018, according to a new report from the American Medical Association. The report, based on the AMA’s Physician Practice Benchmark Survey, assesses how factors such as physician employment status and practice size, type, and ownership changed between 2012 and 2020. The report also found that “17.2% of physicians were in practices with at least 50 physicians in 2020, up from 14.7 % in 2018” and “suggests that the shifts toward larger practices and away from physician-owned (private) practices have accelerated.”
