Orthopedics Today featured a story about orthopaedic surgeons at Twin Cities Orthopedics in Minneapolis/St. Paul who implemented a program to reduce opioid prescribing and patient use. Using a three-phase approach, the clinic first established a prescribing protocol. Then they established guidelines for the physicians and educated patients in office visits prior to surgery. According to the article, “When these guidelines were implemented, the group saw a reduction in the average number of pills prescribed, from 41 to 16 pills, and patient satisfaction with pain control was maintained at 89%.” Full story.
