An article in Orthopedics This Week evaluates a university study from Seoul, South Korea where researchers regenerated knee cartilage in pigs. The study, “Cartilage Repair Using Composites of Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogel in a Minipig Model” was published online before print in Stem Cells Translational Medicine this month. Investigators injected human umbilical cord blood stem cells into the damaged knees of the subject piglets, and showed “superior cartilage regeneration.” Full story.
