A study published in the current issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, “Profiles of Practicing Female Orthopaedists Caring for Medicare Patients in the United States,” used Medicare claims data to analyze demographic and practice characteristics of orthopaedic surgeons who are women. “There are significant differences between female and male orthopaedic surgeons caring for Medicare patients in terms of subspecialty choices, education, billing practices, and attrition rates,” the study concluded.
