Maxwell Courtney, MD is currently a 4th year orthopaedic surgery resident at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed his medical degree at Georgetown University. Dr. Courtney has a strong interest in health policy; particularly how to improve value in joint replacement by optimizing quality and decreasing costs. He currently serves on the institution’s Graduate Medical Education Committee and Risk Reduction Initiative Committee and is the Adult Reconstruction section editor of the University of Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Journal.
Most of Dr. Courtney’s research has been focused on quality improvement and protocols optimizing medical outcomes following joint replacement. He has written for more than 15 peer-reviewed publications and multiple chapters in orthopaedic surgery texts. Dr. Courtney has presented over 20 times at regional and national scientific meetings. He was awarded the 2014 James A. Rand AAHKS Young Investigator Award for his work on identifying the ideal candidate for short-stay and outpatient total joint arthroplasty.
He is a resident member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, the American College of Surgeons, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
2014 Health Policy Fellow Sidenote: Christine M. Pui, MD, a 2014 AAHKS Health Policy Fellow was recently promoted to Vice-Chair of Inpatient Orthopedics at Nicollet Health Services in St. Louis.
