This month’s issue of the Journal of Arthroplasty (JOA) features the AAHKS-initiated clinical practice guidelines for the use of tranexamic acid in total joint arthroplasty along with accompanying articles that “clarify how and when tranexamic acid should be used with the goal of reducing the risk of transfusion for our patients while ‘doing no harm.’” The opening editorial by Craig J. Della Valle, MD, AAHKS President, details when he and many peers experienced a “turning point” at the 2010 AAHKS Annual Meeting where the use of tranexamic acid was introduced as a way to reduce perioperative blood loss and the risk of transfusion.
