This week, AAHKS submitted comments on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Medicare Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) payment system proposed rule for calendar year 2027. In this letter, we explain how OPPS arthroplasty and ASC rates highlight the disparity in Medicare surgeon reimbursement for total joint arthroplasty. While CMS proposes to increase OPPS and ASC rates for arthroplasty in 2027, Medicare rates for the surgeons at the center of these procedures are proposed to be cut by 20% in 2027, representing a 27.5% cut in two years.
