Last week AAHKS joined more than a dozen national specialty societies in writing to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to oppose their intent to develop and implement a prior authorization demonstration for certain ambulatory surgical center (ASC) services. This demonstration would require ASCs in 11 states to submit prior authorization to local MACs for cosmetic procedures. While the demonstration is meant to crack-down on fraud, waste and abuse in cosmetic surgery services, which AAHKS would support, this would create additional burden on providers and is not the right mechanism to combat waste. For more information, read the letter.
