Of the estimated 29,613 orthopaedic surgeons, only 6.5 percent are women. What’s even more staggering is that less than 1 percent are Black women. AAHKS collected the stories of the only African American females who are fellowship trained in orthopaedics. Navigating their career trajectory in a field dominated by white men has not been easy – having little to no representation, difficulty finding mentorship and practicing in a work culture that often minimized their talents. These fellowship trained surgeons work tirelessly to improve the outcomes of patients who look like them. AAHKS hopes this video will serve as a tool to improve the racial/ethnic composition in total joint arthroplasty and make it more diverse with different cultural competencies to help treat a very diverse patient population.
