Healio reported on March 30 that “patients who were morbidly obese and received extended oral antibiotic prophylaxis after primary total hip or knee arthroplasty did not have reduced rates of wound complications or periprosthetic joint infection.” The research, originally published in the April 2021 issue of the Journal of Arthroplasty (JOA), examined THA and TKA surgeries performed since 2015 on patients with BMI over 40 who received 7-14 days of oral antibiotics. Results showed no difference in wound complications or joint infections between patients who received antibiotics and those who did not. Read the Healio article.
