The orthopaedic community was saddened to learn of the death of Dean Carl Maar, MD during a home invasion in Indianapolis on November 27, 2019. Dr. Maar served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arthroplasty from 1991-1999 and served as co-author on several papers and posters presented at AAHKS Annual Meetings. We give our sincere sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues, among them, R. Michael Meneghini, MD, who expressed these condolences:

Dean was a good friend, an extremely compassionate physician and a very talented trauma and hip and knee arthroplasty surgeon. We collaborated on research and direct patient care, and I can say without question his passing is tragic and devastating. His insight and development in the treatment of peri-articular fractures around total knee arthroplasty has helped lead to the modern optimized method of retrograde intramedullary nails with distal locking screw fixation. Despite being an extremely talented surgeon capable of successfully handling the biggest reconstructive cases, he was humble, respectful, collegial and always eager to learn. His loss will be felt deeply by his colleagues and patients alike.
