AAHKS is conducting a survey of members regarding routine pathologic examination of the femoral head. Occult diagnoses such as malignancy or infection discovered during primary THA may have significant implications for postoperative management, patient and implant survival, and cost. Though preoperative patient history and plain radiographs are sufficient to determine if THA is indicated, only pathologic examination of the femoral head specimen provides a definitive diagnosis. However, institutional policies and individual clinical practices surrounding pathologic examination of femoral head specimens are quite variable. The survey aims to assess orthopaedic surgeons’ views on the indications, cost, and value of routine pathologic examination of femoral head specimens obtained during total hip arthroplasty (THA).
