Analysis in a study conducted by QuintilesIMS Institute (funded by Pacira Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) and published in the report, “The United States of Non-Dependence,” looked at seven inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures including total knee and total hip replacement. “Excluding hysterectomies, researchers found that women were 40 percent more likely than men to become persistent opioid users after these procedures,” according to an article on the report in Washington Post’s The Lily.
