The Journal of Arthroplasty: The Cut brings you a very special episode on a topic that we rarely discuss – the surgeon. In this episode, our hosts Kim Tucker, MD and Carlos A. Higuera-Rueda, MD, FAAOS speak with our highly accomplished guests Peter A. Gold, MD and Nana O. Sarpong, MD, MBA on the topic of “physician burnout” that’s garnering a fair amount of attention in recent months. So, how do we preserve the surgeon to avoid burnout when in modern times surgeons are no longer just surgeons but clinicians, technicians, administrators and team leaders and often in the same day.

What makes physician burnout a very plausible reality is the requirement to deliver consistently, like any elite performer. To be there for their patients physically, cognitively and emotionally. But the reality is, surgeons are managing even more complex patients and navigating increasing administrative burdens. So, in this podcast, our hosts and guests answer the question “what happens when the demands of the profession out pace the support systems around it?” For more, listen to the full recording here.
