What Patients are Reading: Antibiotic Embedded Implants

A study published in Nature Biomedical Engineering explores the idea of antibiotic-releasing polymers being used in joint implant components. Invisiverse quotes one of the study’s authors, “Our finding that polyethylene, the most commonly used weight-bearing surface in total joint surgery, can be made to safely and effectively release antibiotics, and that fully weight-bearing implants made with this material could be used to treat infection in a single procedure – reducing both the inconvenience and the risk of complications for patients.” The study concludes that this type of implant is a promising candidate for clinical trials.
