This week, AAHKS President Antonia F. Chen, MD, MBA led a group of AAHKS Advocacy Task Force members, including Adam J. Rana, MD, P. Maxwell Courtney, MD, Stephen M. Engstrom, MD and Paul M. Lichstein, MD, on a trip to Washington, DC, to meet with nearly two dozen Congressional members and staff on health-related committees, as well as leaders from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The group discussed the impact the CMS Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule of 20% cuts to primary hip and knee arthroplasty codes would have on members’ practice and to Medicare patients. Rep. Greg Murphy, MD (R-NC-3), co-chair of the Doc Caucus, has agreed to lead a Congressional letter to CMS telling them to pause the proposed cuts so that a long-term solution can be developed with CMS to revise and fix payment for arthroplasty.
