On February 5, the AAHKS Women in Arthroplasty Committee (WIA) hosted more than 75 female surgeons and 30 supporters and allies for their first virtual event of 2021. Unable to meet at the 30th AAHKS Annual Meeting in Dallas last November due to travel restrictions, the virtual booth crawl provided members with a welcome opportunity for community, networking, education, support and mentoring. The WIA Committee’s mission is to increase exposure, professional development and mentorship of women in the field of adult hip and knee reconstruction. Read more about the event.

“The AAHKS WIA Committee is dedicated to developing programs that encourage and support the engagement of our members in both AAHKS membership and leadership roles in an inclusive and safe environment,” said WIA Chair Audrey K. Tsao, MD. “The program we developed included a talk on leadership lessons for women surgeons during COVID-19 by Claudette M. Lajam, MD, a virtual booth crawl highlighting presentations from Stryker, DePuy Synthes, Zimmer Biomet, DJO Global, Smith & Nephew and Total Joint Orthopedics and concluded with multiple networking breakout sessions.”

The AAHKS industry partners each provided female presenters to speak about, not only their product line innovations, but the ways in which they nurture and support women in leadership roles both in orthopedics and within their own corporate culture.

“The WIA event brought so many women orthopedic surgeons and women in industry together,” said WIA Vice Chair Rina Jain, MD, FRCSC. “In this pandemic, we have been so isolated. This event brought us back together. Thanks to AAHKS and all the vendors for their support, and thanks to all the women and even a few male allies who participated.
