This week Arthroplasty Today published “Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Alternative Payment Model Successes and Challenges,” which is a response to a New England Journal of Medicine article authored by former Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) director Brad Smith, which expresses a “lack of success experienced by CMS and CMMI in terms of cost savings, particularly through alternative payment models (APMs) when looking across all specialties in medicine”. The AT article focuses on the arthroplasty experience in APMs, which were “driven, led, championed, managed, and overseen by orthopedic surgeons” and overall, uniquely successful. AAHKS continues to work with CMS to create successful value-based care and develop future models that reward the development of better outcomes for our patients. Read the article.
