Patients who received extended antibiotics after TJA experienced a significant reduction in risk of periprosthetic joint infection, Healio reported on February 2. Study results were recently published and presented at the 30th AAHKS Annual Meeting in Dallas, where it received the AAHKS Clinical Research Award. Lead investigator Michael M. Kheir, MD, and co-authors compared 3,855 patients who underwent either primary total hip or knee arthroplasty between 2011 and 2019, finding that oral antibiotic use may be a safe and cost-effective way to reduce PJI rates in high-risk patients.
