This week, the AAHKS Board of Directors approved creation of an AAHKS Foundation. AAHKS is recognized by the IRS as a not-for-profit trade association, which allows the organization to carry out significant advocacy and lobbying activities on behalf of its members’ interests, but it cannot accept tax-deductible charitable contributions. In the past, AAHKS members’ contributions and bequests were sent to the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and held as a designated account. Earlier this year, OREF notified AAHKS that its Board approved changes to ensure that they are operating within current best practice guidelines for charitable organizations and encouraged AAHKS to form its own foundation.

The new foundation will facilitate the AAHKS mission to advance and improve hip and knee patient care through leadership in education, advocacy and research. AAHKS will also continue to support OREF’s work of nurturing new investigators and supporting orthopaedic research.
