A fracture risk study of 3221 patients has been conducted in Sweden, showing that patients who had total knee replacement (TKR) because of osteoarthritis, led to a 4% rise in hip fracture risk and a 19% rise in vertebral fracture risk. The study, reported by the International Osteoporosis Foundation and presented at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases, analyzed all Swedish medical records from 1987 to 2002.
